Spotify Wrapped Live

Designing the journey between weekly stats and the annual finale

Overview

Wrapped Live is a product concept for a private, low-frequency narrative layer inside Spotify. It turns weekly Listening Stats into seasonal chapters that build anticipation for Wrapped, without replacing it or diluting the annual reveal. The project spans discovery, user research, concept design, and a prioritized feature set.

The Problem

Spotify Wrapped works because it feels like a reveal, but weekly Listening Stats now give users frequent glimpses of their data, creating a real tension. How do you build year-round engagement with listening insights without training users to expect Wrapped-level storytelling every week? The current experience offers no connective tissue between weekly snapshots and the end-of-year story. Users get receipts, not chapters.

The Hypothesis

If Spotify offers a private, quarterly Listening Chapters experience that converts weekly signals into chapters, moments, and transitions with strong privacy controls and spoiler-safe storytelling, then users who value reflection will revisit insights more often and take actions like saving chapter playlists, while Spotify protects Wrapped's annual magic, because the product adds continuity and meaning without recap fatigue.

Research Approach

I started by checking if this was actually a shared frustration or just my own. I pulled complaints from Reddit threads, App Store reviews, and TechCrunch coverage of recurring Wrapped backlash over the years, where users consistently called it boring, inaccurate, or missing the storytelling that made earlier versions feel personal. From there I built a survey to understand how different types of Spotify users think about their listening data, how they feel about Wrapped's scarcity, and whether a chapter-based system would actually resonate. 10 users completed it across a range of listening habits, and early signal is strong: every respondent expressed interest in a chapters feature and said they would want to see it implemented inside Spotify. That validated the core concept and gave me enough directional signal to move into defining the problem more precisely and prioritizing what to build first.

Status

This case study is actively in progress. I've completed initial discovery and validated the core concept through user research. Next up is synthesizing survey responses into personas, sharpening the problem statement, and moving into solution design and prioritization.
